Wu De’s Teaching Events
Around the World

The Spread of Cha Dao, One Bowl at a Time

Wu De has been around the world sharing tea spirit for years now. It is how so many of us found our way here, after all. We often create four main kinds of events when he travels:

The first is an open, public ceremony that is free and can be limited or very large in size. The aim of these is to foster community. We will drink tea together in silence for forty minutes to an hour, followed by a brief introduction to tea.

The second kind of event is a morning of Cha Dao, in which we drink some tea in silence and spend a morning learning about the practical tools you will need to start a tea practice, as well as the best approach to a life of tea.

The third type of events is linear. Wu De is also very much a tea geek, and therefore loves lecturing on Wuyi Cliff Tea, aging puerh, Liu Bao, gongfu tea brewing, the history of tea, etc. These lectures are, of course, accompanied by tea and often are around two hours.

The final kind of event is an extended retreat, lasting three to seven days. These events are a chance to learn and practice meditation, its connection to tea and how to use tea as a spiritual tool in one’s daily life.

Wu De is dedicated to sharing a life of Tea free of personal profit. Events are donation based, usually with suggested amounts. If one is incapable of meeting the suggested donation, we do our best to accommodate. Ultimately we are here to build community and would love one day to share tea around the world free of charge. All the support we receive goes toward the cost of travel expenses, venue rentals, etc.  He travels humbly, staying with students or homes opened to him. Anything generated beyond that, goes towards The Tea Sage Hut, which is a free tea center in Taiwan, or to raise funds for our new projected tea center Light Meets Life.

Join Wu De for a six-day retreat with the purpose of deepening your meditation and Cha Dao (The Way of Tea). We’ll delve into the ancient tradition that unites Zen and Tea and discover how tea can help us live more consciously in our daily lives.

Throughout the week, Wu De will guide us towards understanding the meaning of the famous Zen saying, “Zen and Tea one flavor.” He’ll instruct us on meditation and its relationship with Tea. We’ll learn how our Zen mind affects our tea and how to prepare tea in a Zen state so we can then extrapolate the teachings to our daily lives. We’ll rise early each day and begin with morning chanting and, since water plays such a fundamental role in tea preparation and tea ceremony, we’ll benefit from the magic, beauty and purity of being at the largest calcareous mountain range in Europe and each day embark on walking meditations to a very special fountains to bring back the day’s water. Throughout the week we’ll also take a couple of longer hikes to enjoy outdoor tea sessions in pristine natural environments, making tea with the pure water that we gather. There will be classes and talks teaching us about the importance of water, practical and spiritual teachings on tea ceremony, for receiving advice and tips on how to improve our tea service and an exploration of the art of the simplicity of a bowl of tea. There will also be moments each day for questions and answers and also moments for private meetings between students and teacher. There will also be time for sharing and fostering friendship through preparing tea for the other participants.
