Usually, shou puerh doesn’t have any old-growth tea in it because tea from old trees is very expensive and the piling reduces the quality and essence of the tea, which is a shame. Part of why Samadhi is able to contain old-growth tea and still remain affordable is that the leaves are larger, lower-down, thinner and bigger leaves, called “huang pian (黃片).” These were blended with other kinds of leaves, bringing a nice, balanced flavor. Huang pian are essentially the leaves left on the tree to grow.

Samadhi is also special because it was only ever owned by one merchant, whom we know and trust. Samadhi is rich and bright, with a clarity not usually present in puerh, especially shou. This is also due to the older leaves. The softness and clarity of the liquor also translates to the energy, which is Yin and calming. They all come because of the tea. Why is Lao Banzhang tea such a hot commodity on the tea market? Why did its prices skyrocket so quickly? What is it that’s so special about this tea?

Lao Banzhang tea prices have increased more than a thousandfold over the past twenty years. Thanks to its bold character, Lao Banzhang has stood out among all the other mountain teas of the region to earn itself a reputation as the “King of Puerh.” Its distinctive character has been described thus: “At first sip, it is smooth yet contains a hint of bitterness; this faint bitter flavor massages the fragrance of the tea, slowly revolving in the mouth; distant strains of sweetness turn over and over in the throat, lingering after the tea is gone.” It’s a feeling that those who have tasted authentic Lao Banzhang tea will truly understand.

In 2008, a group of around thirty tea lovers in Taiwan blind taste-tested thirty Lao Banzhang cakes. Sanctuary was ranked 2nd place amongst the thirty! The amazing thing is that the raise in price for storing the cake coupled with the fact that the shop donated a portion of the proceeds of this cake towards our future Center, means that this old cake is cheaper than a lot of brand new Lao Banzhang tea. In our opinion, it isn’t just older, it is better, coming from a time when all the hoopla was less pronounced.

This cake can teach you about Lao Banzhang tea, but it is also just a stellar tea and shows that behind all the hype, which may be inflated, there is intrinsic power and quality to the old trees there. This is a great tea to age or to drink. You’d be hard pressed to find better.

[split] 2005 Old-Growth Lao Banzhang Sheng Puerh

Dragonheart is a late 1980s/early 1990s “little green” shou brick of 7638. We can never be sure of the vintage of such teas, but we suspect this to be late 1980s. It is a marvelous tea and what we consider to be exemplary of the best of such teas. It has a rich and complex tea liquor with notes of Chinese medicinal herbs and an aftertaste of camphor. The energy is warm and bold, moving slow and yet constant, much like a pilgrim should. Our friend in Malaysia bought it in 2005 because he tasted it and thought it was a great tea. It has been stored with him ever since. The humidity and climate in Malaysia is very steady, which results in smooth, even tea with a drone-like Qi. Our friend’s storage facility is very professional, so this tea is immaculately stored, with a crisp and bold flavor and enough astringency to demonstrate that this tea could also be stored for twenty more years. That said, it is very nice to drink now, especially when brewed gongfu. The liquor is thick and rich, with a bold and forward aroma of wild honey.
