They would have been carried by horses traditionally—but whether driven or walked, they had to cross through the highest mountain passes in the world. In the 1980s and before, such black tea was harvested from late-season leaves called “huang pian,” and often from older, wild trees. The tea was processed similar to brick teas in Hunan, with post-production, artificial fermentation in the form of piling. These teas were incredibly cheap at the time, and so no farmer would have been able to afford any agrochemicals even if he or she wanted to use them, meaning that we can be most assured that this tea is clean.

Mountain Passage is from the mid-1980s, and is, therefore, a very old black tea, offering a wonderful chance to taste some history.

These bricks have aged beautifully. They shine brightest when they are boiled, offering a whole afternoon of enjoyment and wonderful delight. We definitely recommend this brewing method. Of course, Mountain Passage is also wonderful in a sidehandle or brewed gongfu as well. We are selling bricks and broken, loose bags of Mountain Passage. The bags will all be 100 grams, but the bricks will definitely vary. Liu Bao tea and Malaysia share a destiny, though distant in space and time. Like much of us, raised far from the home of Tea, Malaysia and Liu Bao were fated to be in love. Liu Bao tea is very suitable for drinking in the Malaysian climate, which is warm and humid. It is smooth, cooling and comfortable to drink in the weather there. What is also interesting, though, is that Liu Bao tea ages much better in Malaysia than in southern China or Hong Kong. Of course, Malaysians all think that tea ages better there as well, but standing back, one can appreciate the differences between the traditional puerh storage areas of Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan as just different, and each with its own positive and negative characteristics. Malaysian-stored tea is much more even-keeled, smooth and steady, which really reflects the climate there. Malaysia is also very steady, and besides a short rainy season (usually in December), doesn’t see much fluctuation in temperature and humidity over long periods.

And that is the main reason that Ma Bao is so special: It was stored in Malaysia from its creation to the present. Many Liu Bao teas were kept for some time in Guangxi, and then often in Hong Kong as well, before making their way to Malaysia. But this unique tea was purchased brand new and stored in Malaysia ever since. This lends it a unique flavor unlike other Liu Bao teas of a similar age—it is smoother, brighter and also longer lasting.

Ma Bao is a beautiful tea with all the characteristic flavors of Liu Bao teas. It is deep, dark and rich, and if you have experience drinking various aged Liu Bao teas, you will indeed notice the smooth and consistent Malaysian storage, which highlights the tea’s steady pulse. Most of the black tea produced in Hunan was exported to Tibet, Mongolia and other parts of Central Asia. Almost all the black tea in Hunan is made of huang pian, which are essentially the leaves left on the tree to grow. Much of what makes Hunanese black tea unique is the complicated processing, which includes more post-production fermentation than any other kind of tea. Of course, the qualities of any tea are as much in the terroir, the soil, climate and type of tree as the processing. Fu cha is very unique because it is made from summer leaves, left to grow on the trees longer. The varietals in Hunan are mostly medium-leaf—something between a small-leaf bush and the large-leaf varietals of Yunnan, which are used to make puerh. This affects the chemistry of the tea as well as the subtler, energetic properties, which we will discuss later.

Prairie Sky is a simple, ordinary and earthy tea. Old scrolls associated it with the earth and wood elements, in fact, and suggested that boiling this simple tea helped to ground us. Brick tea harmonizes our bodies, especially when boiled, centering the flow of Qi through the channels and grounding force that can help to stabilize the digestion and bring balance to the body and spirit. This kind of brick tea is very simple, heralding back to less complex times when tea was boiled all day over an open fire, perhaps in an old wood kitchen or even a Mongolian horse-trader’s tent—the open sky and prairie an infinity just beyond the flap.

[split] 1990s Hunan Black Tea

This amazing Liu An is very special. There were traditionally three types of black tea produced in Hunan: fu cha (茯茶), or brick tea; qian liang tea (千兩茶), which are giant logs of tea; and tian jian (天尖) tea, which could be translated as “heaven tip” or “heavenly basket,” as these are baskets of all-bud black tea. Most of the black tea produced in Hunan was exported to Tibet, Mongolia and other parts of Central Asia. The trade in black tea has gone on for centuries, but it is unclear when Hunan started producing bricks for export. Hunanese brick tea often includes medicinal “golden flowers
(金花, jin hua, Eurotium cristatum),” which used to be a lucky occurrence on a brick, but now with modern science is common on all bricks. It is believed to be effective in treating diabetes, promoting metabolism, and as a digestive aid (more research is needed in this area).
