Hemp Chabu
Crafted from organic, handwoven hemp by the H’mong tribe of Northern Vietnam, these chabus embody a centuries-old tradition. The labor-intensive process begins from scratch with cultivating hemp crops, taking 7–9 months from planting to harvesting, drying, fiber separation, weaving, and dyeing.
Generations of knowledge are infused into these lengths of fabric and H’mong women are renowned for their weaving expertise, valuing hemp for its strength and durability. After weaving, the hemp is hand-dyed using native plants and flowers sourced from local forests, including spinach, turmeric, avocado skins and seeds, indigo root, yam root, eucalyptus, and more. To achieve a certain intensity of colour often requires dyeing and drying the fabric over 30 times. Variations in color arise from weather and temperature, making each chabu unique and a reflection of its environment. No harmful chemicals are used, and the water used for dyeing is recycled for irrigation, ensuring no soil pollution. This sustainable, traditional method is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the H’mong tribe and underscores the skill and dedication to this ancient craft. We hope these pieces are a beautiful addition to your chaxi and of great support and inspiration to your tea practice.
We honour the craftmanship and devotion that has gone into preserving such traditions that are in harmony with nature. As a result of the intensive handmade aspect of each piece there may be some natural colour variations and pieces may slightly vary in texture, finish and exact size. As these are true natural dyes (not synthetic), a little colour may release or transfer if the fabric gets soaked, therefore we recommend being mindful of heavy water exposure. A little extra care will keep these colours vibrant for years to come!
