Sunset Bell is an award winning gongfu red tea. It comes from an eco-arboreal garden outside of Taoyuan. Most red tea is the second flush of whatever tea the region is famous for, sold for cheaper and produced with less intention. “Gongfu red tea” is when the farmers focus on quality and use their best raw material to produce red tea. This red tea was masterfully roasted by Master Lü Lizhen (呂禮臻). It is fruity, nutty and sweet, offering a complexity that is rare for Taiwanese red teas, which is why it was awarded. It has bright, clean and bold Qi that opens the pores. It is smooth and delicious. It shines when brewed gongfu, but can also be brewed in a sidehandle or leaves in a bowl.

The Farmer

Master Lu 呂禮臻

Lu Li Zhen (呂禮臻) was born in 1952 in Xin Bei, in the very north of Taiwan. His uncle owned a tea shop in Ban Chiao, and for more than thirty years Master Lu has roasted and sold tea in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Japan and Europe, especially Germany, where he often travels to lecture. He roasts every oolong he sells, keeping alive the old tradition in which farmers made maocha, or unfinished tea, and tea shops finished it by roasting. Very few shops still work this way, and Master Lu does it with decades of skill and several competition wins. He also tends his own clean, biodiverse farm in Taoyuan, and in the puerh world he helped revive the industry in the early 1990s.
