This handmade flower vase is made by Luo Wei (羅偉) here in Taiwan. It is made with clay from our own Miaoli county, which has a long history with clay and pottery. The vase is finished in a shino glaze, whose milky white surface blushes warm persimmon where the glaze runs thin, which is what inspired its name. Flowers have always accompanied tea, and a vase like this completes a chaxi, inviting a single stem or a small seasonal arrangement to bring Nature into the tea space. Like all of Luo Wei's work, each vase is unique, with slight variations in color and form that are part of its handmade beauty.

The vase is approximately 12cm tall and 7cm across at its widest point.

The Artisan

Luo Wei 羅偉

Luo Wei (羅偉) was born in Kaohsiung in 1975 and began his apprenticeship at the Gangshan Pottery Studio in 1996. In 2015 he and his wife founded their studio, Qi Tao Lang (砌陶郎), now in Sanyi, Miaoli, where the local iron-rich red clay finds its way into his work. Early in his career he realized that only work made with feeling carries a soul, so he set aside showy technique in favor of a slower conversation with the clay. His glazes range from quiet natural wood ash to free-spirited shino and the warm, jade-like glow of Ru ware.
